The main purpose of endodontics (commonly referred to as root canal treatment) is to preserve damaged teeth as opposed to removing them. Specializing in treatment of the pulp of the tooth, endodontics is over 90% effective thanks to the latest technology.

There are several factors and symptoms that could cause the need for root canal treatment

  • Trauma to the tooth
  • Inflamed/infected tooth pulp
  • Swelling or tenderness near the infected tooth
  • Severe sensitivity to hot and cold elements
  • Periodontal disease in its advanced stage

Dr. Matheson will examine and take X-rays, if necessary, to determine whether root canal treatment is needed. If treatment is indicated, we will schedule the necessary appointments.

After the patient undergoes anesthesia, a dental dam is used to isolate the tooth. The tooth is opened to allow for the removal of the infected dental pulp. Following a comprehensive cleaning, Dr. Matheson reshapes the canal and fills it with a permanent material. A permanent restoration will need to be placed at the next appointment.

Thanks to the latest technology, root canals are nearly pain-free. The patient may feel some discomfort and sensitivity following the procedure; however, over-the-counter pain medications can help alleviate the discomfort. If a prescription is needed, we will provide one.

Following root canal treatment, it is important to maintain a good oral hygiene regimen and continue to see your dentist on a regular basis. The treated tooth may show some discoloration and may be fragile, so in most cases, we advise the patient to have a permanent crown placed. Tooth whitening can also be an option if the patient does not choose to have the tooth crowned. With the proper care, the treated tooth can have the same longevity as the rest of your natural teeth.
